Anime is a short form of the Japanese noun for animation. To the western society, anime refers to Japanese animation, and only a relatively few of these have reached mainstream western culture. However, thanks to the internet, anime has travelled across the Pacific into our homes, DVD stores and onto our computers.
Some animes are fantasy, featuring characters with extravagant costumes and weapons, some are violent, and some are comedy. Most however feature school girls dressed in Japanese school-girl sailor uniform. Close relatives of Japanese anime are manga – Japanese comics – and hentai – pornography in the form of anime. A fan of Japanese anime and manga are referred to as being an ‘Otaku’, Japanese for roughly ‘anime nerd’! Bailey Jay is an otaku!
Here are two different anime styles, from Chobits, and My Neighbour Totoro.
